STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — The State College Area School District (SCASD) Board of Directors approved the Mount Nittany Elementary Project Act 34 booklet on Monday, a key step toward addressing increased student enrollment.

The approval sets the stage for an Act 34 public hearing scheduled for Sept. 30, where details of the project will be presented.

The planned project includes constructing a 40,000-square-foot wing to provide additional classroom space and facilities, including a separate cafeteria, STEM and music classrooms, and special education support services. The expansion will bring Mount Nittany Elementary’s enrollment capacity to roughly 430 students, comparable to Park Forest and Radio Park elementary schools.

Pending a final board vote to begin the bidding process on Sept. 23, construction could start as early as December or January and is expected to take about 18 months to complete.

In other business, the board voted 8-1 to remove playground mounds at Coral Street and Radio Park elementary schools due to safety concerns. The mounds, installed in 2019 as part of a nature-based playground initiative, have eroded and attracted stinging insects. Removing the mounds is projected to cost $60,000.
