Gobblers Knobs to host annual Groundhog Picnic

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) – For 126 years, Punxsutawney Phil fans have gathered months before Groundhog Day to celebrate Phil as he drinks the “Elixir of Life.”

The event, which starts at 1:00 p.m., will have many events such as lunch, and cornhole tournament, the elixir of life ceremony and a steak dinner.

“At the picnic, we serve lunch which is your usual picnic fare like hamburgers, hot dogs, kielbasa, potato salad and macaroni salad and then the elixir of life happens around 4. That’s where the inner circle members will walk down with Punxsutawney Phil and we will put him on the stage and everybody from the picnic comes down and we watch Phil drink the elixir of life,” President of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Thomas Dunkel said.

The Elixir of Life is believed to bring Phil seven extra years of longevity with every sip.

“It is a super secret concoction that Phil has drank for many, many years, and with every sip that he takes, gives him seven years of longevity. So Phil feels good to go for a long time because he usually takes four or five sips every year,” Dunkel said.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased either in person at Gobblers Knob or online at the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website .
