JEFFERSON COUNTY (WTAJ) – The Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center introduced a new feature to their building in late August.

The ‘Explore an Ice Core’ exhibit features different educational activities that show visitors what slices of an ice core look like. It also has full-size ice core replicas and it gives visitors an opportunity to pull a piece of ice core.

Designers and builders from Carnegie Science Center and Printscape in conjunction with the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility worked hard to bring the science and exploration of ice dating to Punxsutawney.

“Our visitors absolutely love this exhibit. We have a full-sized section of an ice core replica and then some slices of replicas as well so they can use handhelds to kind of examine and check out what’s inside of those, and it’s really really cool,” Executive Director Lisa Waksmunski said.

The center added that visitors can study gas bubbles, plant parts, ash and other items trapped deep in the ice to see how Earth’s climate has changed over time.

The center made some upgrades to their already built ice wall as well to help accommodate kids of all heights to interact with.
