SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Humane Society of Somerset County (HSSC) is gearing up for one of its biggest fundraisers of the year this weekend.

The “Fast and Furriest” car show will take place Saturday, Sept. 14, at Memorial Highway Chevrolet of Somerset, located at 2006 North Center Avenue.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Humane Society said the first 100 cars will receive a dash plaque, goodie bag, and t-shirt. Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories.

Everyone will be able to enjoy live music from DJ Almost Heaven and The Vandells and the Pappy D’s food truck will also be on site.

The Humane Society said raising funds is especially important given their challenges, including increased animal intake at the no-kill shelter.

“Right now, the shelter is at max capacity with many adoptable cats and dogs looking for their forever homes,” shelter manager Kourtney Lizza said. “At this time, the shelter is unable to accept any more dogs or cats. Sadly, we’ve had very few adoptions over the last few weeks, which prevents us from taking in new animals.”

HSSC will also be collecting donations of food, treats, cleaning supplies and other needed items at the event. These items can also be dropped off at the shelter during normal business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday through Sunday.

“If you are searching for a new forever friend, stop by the Humane Society of Somerset County and visit with some of the wonderful animals we have waiting for a home,” Lizza added. The staff and board of the HSSC also encourage pet owners in Somerset County to spay and neuter their animals to help reduce overpopulation.

The staff and board of HSSC encourage people who are interested in adoption to contact the shelter ahead of time at 814-443-2121 to schedule an appointment.
