CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — $220,000 in state grants was obtained to help a local fire station renovate its facility and obtain new equipment.

State Representative Frank Burns announced Monday that the funds are being awarded to the Cover Hill Volunteer Fire Company to bring them into ADA compliance. This includes renovating restrooms and upgrading the entrance to the fire company’s building.

According to Burns, the grants will help shave five to 10 years off the projected timetable to make the fire station ADA-compliant. He added the money will also be put towards a new emergency generator for the building and replace 40-year-old hydraulic tools.

“I’ll tell you how this happened: By me attending the Cover Hill VFC spaghetti dinner fundraisers, and taking the time to learn about their plans for improving their facility,” Burns said. “I also spoke at their banquet, where I told them I’m working on getting the funding. Then I delivered.”

Cover Hill Volunteer Fire Company President William Scherer said their station covers 12 square miles including Conemaugh Township and Daisytown Borough and has about two dozen core members.

“Frank was very vital in getting us this funding. Since he became our representative, he’s worked with us quite a bit,” Scherer said. “He’s been quite a bit of help for us.”
