ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum has announced that they’ll be hosting fall tours and visitors will get a chance to see the behind-the-scenes of one of their restoration projects.

Fall Roundhouse Tours will be offered for a $10 donation on Sept. 21 and Oct. 9 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Volunteers will guide attendees through the K4 1361 restoration, historic rolling stock and behind-the-scenes of what workers do for the museum.

Fight to save the face of the Allegheny Mountain continues

The K4 1361, a steam locomotive, was built in the Juniata Shops and went into service in May 1918 . For more than 35 years the engine hauled trains over the main line, first between New York and Pittsburgh and later, after the eastern lines.

The engine retired in 1956 with over 2 million miles . However, decades of exposure to the elements left it rusted and suffering from great deterioration. Despite the damage, strong public interest has spurred the push to see the locomotive restored.

This is your chance to learn about the exciting progress we have been making this summer. See you soon in Railroad City!
