CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) – Leaders in Centre County are continuing their efforts to bring broadband Internet to underserved areas, and they have already taken the first step.

The county has already mapped out the areas that need service the most, so now it’s up to the Internet Service Providers to make a plan. They will need to fulfill several requirements in their plan, all to ensure that the project is actually possible.

“We do want to see some level of affordability for low-income households,” Assistant Planning Director Elizabeth Lose said.

The plans won’t need to be submitted until January 2025 to give the providers enough time to flesh out their plans.

Commissioner Chair Mark Higgins threw in a reminder to sweeten the deal further.

“I did want to remind the Internet Service Providers that the Centre County Commissioners have reserved up to $1 million of American Rescue Plan funding for local match,” Higgins said.
