EMPORIUM, Pa. (WTAJ) — When one door closes, another opens, as the old saying goes — and it is especially true in Cameron County.

In early August, Sheetz announced they would be closing their only store in Emporium, but a reason wasn’t given. Residents voiced their thoughts on social media, unable to understand why a store they said was always busy would be closing.

However, that will soon be an afterthought when Nittany MinitMart opens its doors in the borough.

The company announced plans on its Facebook to open a new location in Emporium at 15420 Route 120, the site formerly known as the GKN Plant 1.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be joining the Emporium community,” they posted.

When will the new Nittany MinitMart store open?

Nittany MinitMart hasn’t released a date, or even a timeframe, saying that the company is working with local officials concerning the permit process, an early stage of the planning processes coming on the heels of the Sheetz closure.

The company added that they’re thankful for the support from local and county governments and officials to bring the new location to Emporium. The company also praised the community for the positive reception, saying it’s been “instrumental” in advancing plans.

    What is Nittany MinitMart?

While their Facebook post lights up with excitement from the Emporium community, some may have never been to a Nittany MinitMart.

According to the company, they are a regional convenience chain with 28 locations (currently) throughout Pennsylvania. They offer fuel, fresh food options, and convenience items such as snacks, drinks, and much more.

The company touts its charity to the local communities. In 2023, they said they donated over $200,000 to local nonprofits such as volunteer fire companies, animal shelters, and school/youth sports programs.

“We are pleased and very excited to work with Nittany MinitMart on this significant development that will have a major positive impact on Cameron County in terms of employment and economic vitality,” Potter Lands, LLC co-founder Todd Brown said. “In addition, we are grateful to Nittany MinitMart for their future investment in the Emporium community, as well as our appreciation to Cameron County Commissioners, Cliff Clark, Director of Cameron County Industrial Development Authority, and Shippen Township officials as we work together to build Nittany MinitMart’s newest location.”

Any night owls in Emporium? You’re in luck. The company also revealed that the new store will be open 24/7.

With the exit of Sheetz, Emporium officials worked to find a resolution. Nittany MinitMart stepped in and they hope to make a significant impact once the doors are officially open.
