BEDFORD, Pa. (WTAJ) — Bedford County students learned about different jobs in relation to the agricultural industry.

The Bedford County Chamber of Commerce hosted an agricultural career fair at the Bedford County Fairgrounds Tuesday morning. In attendance were 500 7th-grade students. They were bussed over to learn about 22 different careers in the farming world.

Stations included veterinarian jobs, heavy machinery, truck driving, forestry and cattle tending. Students had a chance to visit each station, with each of their own interactive and hands-on lessons.

“Students that come here today will be sparked for some kind of interest in one of these career fields,” Kellie Goodman-Shaffer, the president and CEO of the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce said. “We hope that they get to see the big tractors and all the bales of hay and say, ‘Maybe I could drive that truck someday,’ or visit the game commission and say, ‘Boy I would love to be a game commission officer. We’re just trying to give them as many opportunities to experience different industries as they possibly can in hopes that they’ll find something that sparks their interest.”

With agriculture being an ever-changing industry over the years, it may stipend the local jobs in the area. Bedford County thrives on farming, and some positions are in high need today.

“America feeds America and the world with our agriculture,” Goodman-Shaffer added. “There are always going to be hobs in agriculture for kids.”
