BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A phone scam is making its way across Blair County in which the caller demands money to settle an arrest warrant.

Blair County Sheriff James Ott warned that his office received reports of the scam from residents who said a man called them identifying himself as a county sheriff’s deputy. The caller claimed the victim missed jury duty or a witness appearance, and an arrest warrant had been issued.

The victim is instructed to pay a dollar amount to resolve the warrant. According to the sheriff’s office, the caller gives a case number, the victim’s personal information and utilizes a phone number that is disguised to appear the sheriff’s office is calling to make the situation seem legitimate.

Sheriff Ott reminded residents that Blair County Law Enforcement will never call and give the recipient options to settle a warrant or similar filing over the phone by making monetary arrangements or requesting personal information.
