HARRISBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Centre County Conservation District has been awarded a $1.54 million grant to overhaul outdated manure storage systems at a small beef farm in Julian, state Rep. Paul Takac announced today, Oct. 16.

The project aims to prevent harmful pollutants from entering local waterways and improve water quality for residents and wildlife.

Port Royal receives nearly $3.7 Million for wastewater treatment plant upgrades

The grant, approved by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, will decommission the farm’s old storage unit and construct a new 60-by-280-foot manure stacking structure. The project also includes other improvements such as a heavy-use feeding area, fencing, and a roof.

“The project will keep thousands of pounds of pollutants like nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment out of our water each year,” Takac said. “It’s a major win for our enviroment and local communities.”

The farm, which houses 100 beef cows and other livestock, has long struggled to secure funding for such upgrades, according to Jim Colso, district manager of the Centre County Conversation District.
