PLAINFIELD, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Connecticut State Police are investigating the tossing of $52,000 in cash onto a highway during a police chase.

Troopers say a man was seen around 11:15 a.m. Monday tampering with an ATM machine and looking into parked cars at the I-395 Northbound Service Plaza in the town of Plainfield.

When troopers showed up, the suspect darted across the highway and went into a black BMW SUV with Pennsylvania plates that was parked at the service plaza on the southbound side of the highway.

Troopers tried to stop the SUV as it sped out of the parking lot and went down the highway but gave up due to dangerous speeds.

During the chase, however, a backpack containing $52,000 in cash, a mobile hotspot, and an iPhone were thrown out of the SUV.

So far, the investigation has shown the same BMW in the same area Monday morning at different times.

One suspect, wearing a black long-sleeve shirt and tan pants, used an electronic device to remove money from a Citibank ATM. His accomplice wore a white Nike short-sleeve shirt and tan pants.

Both men are described as white and had on white shoes, black caps, a tan waist bag, and sunglasses.
