CT State Police Chaplain killed in Rt. 9 Berlin crash

BERLIN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A Connecticut State Police Chaplain is dead after a crash involving a vehicle on Route 9 in Berlin.

Dr. Paul Krampitz, 65, of Cromwell, was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Route 9 Northbound in Berlin, when a 2006 Chevrolet Impala LS crossed over from its lane into Krampitz's lane.

After the crash, State Police say Dr. Krampitz was taken to New Britain Hospital, where he later died from injuries that were considered life-threatening.

Former Commissioner John A. Danaher III appointed Dr. Krampitz as a CT State Police Chaplain on July 3, 2008.

As a chaplain, Dr. Krampitz was assigned to Troop L (Litchfield), H (Hartford), and DESPP Headquarters in Middletown.

In a statement, CT State Police say Chaplain Krampitz touched the lives of hundreds of Troopers, Dispatchers, and support staff in his 16 years of service.

They go on to say, in their statement, Dr. Krampitz was a pillar to their agency following the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and navigated the agency through dozens of Critical Incident Stress Management debriefings.

Chaplain Krampitz is survived by his wife Paula and their three children Zoë, Zaidan and Zachary. He has two adult daughters, Christina and Maria.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about it should contact Troop H in Hartford.
