Horses safe, after Big E barn fire

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WTIC Radio) - West Springfield Fire says a minor fire at a barn at the Big E resulted in an evacuation of 161 horses who made it to safety.

The West Springfield Fire Department says it responded to 28 calls for help at the Big E Fairgrounds around 11:45 p.m. Friday, about 45 minutes after closing for the night.

There was a fire in the C Barn that prompted the evacuation of 161 horses.

The fire was contained, according to officials, who say a sprinkler system helped to keep the fire under control.

An investigation into the fire remains ongoing. There's no word of a possible cause.
