NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Come this winter, Breeze Airways will fly from Tweed New Haven Airport (HVN), making it the airport’s second airline partner.

The low-cost airline will start service on Dec. 10, with nonstop flights five times a week to Fort Myers, Florida.

The next day, flights to Orlando and West Palm Beach will start, then Vero Beach Dec. 13 and six additional destination in February: Charleston, Jacksonville, Norfolk, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond, and Sarasota-Bradenton.

These destinations are all available to book through May 12, 2025 now.

Breeze officials said they also plan to expand their base operations at Bradley International Airport (BDL) to include international flights before the end of the year, after finishing up a certification process.

Tweed New Haven Airport currently serves as the headquarters for Avelo Airlines, another budget-friendly airline. Avelo recently announced expansion too, with service starting at Bradley International Airport soon .

HVN said they received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration in December to continue with plans to modernize the airport by lengthening the runway and erecting a “modern, environmentally friendly terminal in the years ahead.”

“From ‘Day One’ our playbook has included significant growth across the Northeast region of the U.S. due to the high population density and limited nonstop travel options,” Breeze Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer Lukas Johnson said in a statement.

On Tuesday, East Haven Mayor Joseph A. Carfora released a statement saying he learned about HVN bringing in another air carrier on Monday night.

He said the airports’ operator AVports has not provided the town with state-required traffic studies, environmental assessments, public safety plans, or a clear schedule of necessary permits.

Carfora said the company’s “lack of organization and communication” leads to concerns for the neighborhoods in New Haven already “bearing the brunt of the current setup.”

“Based on the limited information available to us, there seems to be no end in sight for those affected residents. We are also closely monitoring the increased car and truck traffic on our roadways in East Haven,” Carfora said.

“Our legal team and expert advisors have consistently questioned the direction, planning, and overall feasibility of this project. The Town of East Haven remains fully committed to holding AVports and Tweed accountable at every stage. We will continue to protect the rights and quality of life for the residents of East Haven,” he said.
