NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Some University of New Haven students kickstarted the new academic year on Friday by volunteering.

“As part of their orientation they are getting to go out into the community to really make a difference, to connect with one another and really help create a ripple effect of change,” Maria Arnold, the chief advancement officer of the United Way of Greater New Haven.

Ninety residential assistants worked on projects involving the children and the elderly.

“I get to see the community out there and see it impacts them,” Mia Ribellino, a senior at the University of New Haven, said. “Last year, I was grateful enough to go to a camp to help the kids, and it was really exciting.”

They pulled weeds and planted at a community garden, among other projects.
