SOMERS, Conn. (WTNH) — Is the answer to Somers’ trash crisis in your pantry?

Instead of throwing out your uneaten food, the public works department is asking you to turn it in . The town said that 25% of household waste comes from food scraps, and that by helping convert the food into renewable energy, it can cut down on costs to ship trash to out-of-state landfills.

The public works department has called it “a waste management crisis” spurred on by the closing of a trash plant in Hartford. At least 20 municipalities in Connecticut have signed on for a food scrap collection program.
