MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Buying new stuff is a fun part of back-to-school, but when it comes to a new backpack, it’s more than just colors and designs.

Kids everywhere—like Milford’s Lily Buglione—are now sifting through racks, looking for the perfect new school bag.

“I really like picking out new backpacks because I feel like buying your style, she said. “It kind of shows your personality.”

But experts said it’s not as easy as plucking one you like off a rack.

“They’re looking for cute bags, such as Disney princess bags,” Miflord Boscov’s Annette Hasbrouck said. “These bags are cute but not practical.”

Hasbrouck helps kids like Buglione find the perfect fit.

Adjusting straps is key so their back doesn’t start to hurt by the end of a school week.

Like anything, you don’t want to judge a book by its cover. You want to ensure there’s enough space and organizational features for all the stuff they’ll get.

Certain bags may be better for different age groups.

Naugatuck’s Sabrina Costa reminded us why it’s so essential for kids to choose one they like on the outside, too.

    “You feel confident,” she said.

Experts suggest parents ask questions before buying. Consider the number of books your child will be carrying, and have someone size them before you walk out of the store.
