NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — New Haven police shot a dog on Thursday morning while trying to take a home invasion suspect into custody, according to police.

The dog was grazed by a bullet, according to police.

Jaiquan Moye, 20, broke into a home shortly after midnight on Thursday, according to police. After an argument, he pushed in an air condition, threatened a person with a knife and then ran off.

Police then secured a perimeter around Moye’s apartment on Winchester Avenue, according to police. A person inside an apartment then said he’d release his pit bull on the officers in the stairwell. The dog “aggressively” ran at officers, who fired two shots.

Moye, who was not home at the time, later turned himself in. He’s been charged with home invasion, second-degree threatening, second-degree breach of peace and risk of injury to a minor.

Police have not said if the person who owns the dog has been charged.
