CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — The state of Connecticut has started spraying areas to protect people from mosquitoes with eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE).

Connecticut leaders concerned about deadly EEE virus

A mild winter and wet spring led to an uptick in the amount of spring mosquitoes, Mosquito Management Coordinator of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Roger Wolfe said.

Mosquitoes have tested positive in many towns along the eastern part of the state. DEEP began spraying infected areas on Thursday ahead of Labor Day weekend to bring down the amount of adult mosquitoes in the area, Wolfe said.

DEEP said to avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk and to wear long sleeves and pants to avoid mosquito bites this weekend. It also is important to remember that these mosquito viruses are serious, but rare.
