OXFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Students in Oxford are finally heading back to school Thursday!

Washed-out roads caused by flash flooding last month put the year on pause, but it won’t be long before students arrive for their first day of school.

Classes were supposed to start on Aug. 28, but an act of nature put all that on hold.

Rain fell hard and fast causing flash flooding. It also caused roads to be shut down and created safety concerns.

According to the first selectman, some streets may still be closed. Detours have been put in place, allowing for a safe journey to school.

The superintendent of schools met with engineers to determine the best routes for buses and also created community bus stops for kids in more damaged areas.

Some parents said it’s been a tough couple of weeks.

“We plan out childcare with camp and then going right into school so not having accommodations was a challenge,” parent Tim Gannon said.

“When they first announced that there was going to be no school, Abby was definitely upset but the other two were like, yes we can still sleep in and ‘mom can we have a sleepover?’ As the week went on I think the novelty wore off and they were getting very antsy so this news is phenomenal. We can’t wait,” parent Jaci Freddino said.
