HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A woman is recovering in the hospital after being assaulted with a knife during a carjacking this morning in Hartford.

At around 6:15 a.m., Hartford police officers arrived at the Mobil Gas Station on 605 Albany Ave., where they encountered a woman, alert and conscious but suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Officers were on scene most of the morning, according to neighbors and nearby businesses.

“Around 6 o’clock, my mom heard sirens that woke her up and my wife up,” said neighbor Reynaldo Caraballo. “And then at 9 o’clock, when I came down, they told me there was a whole bunch of cops, yellow tape, and a whole bunch of movement here.”

Police say the assault occurred during a carjacking, and the suspect managed to drive away in the woman’s vehicle.

The woman is described as being in her thirties and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to available data from police, there have been 764 auto thefts this year, through August 31. Looking at same time frame, the area with the most car thefts is Northwest with 228 incidents.

The Southeast has had 225 followed by 170 incidents in the Southwest. 131 have been recorded in the Northeast.. that’s where Saturday morning’s incident occurred.

While the total number of car thefts this year to date has dropped 9% from last year, neighbors like Caraballo said they feel unsafe after hearing about a violent carjacking just around the corner from their homes.

“I heard about it, mostly on the southside, about the carjackings and stuff but never on this side,” said Caraballo. “Really it’s just a lot of craziness and hectic stuff at nighttime mostly, when everything happens.

The Hartford Police Department’s Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions are leading this investigation and are actively searching for the suspect.
