EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) – Hundreds of runners laced up their shoes Sunday morning for the East Haven Community Classic 5K Road Race.

The race is a flat, fast, course that passed through neighborhoods and the East Haven business district. The route begins at the Town Green, runs through downtown East Haven and returns to the Green.

The race gets more interest every year according to the coordinator, Joe Jarmie, who said, “We had a record number of runners this year. We basically had 250 runners, we had a senior walk, 25 seniors and kids fun run we had 15. So we’re up to almost 300, when we first started we had 100.”

People of all ages and physical ability were encouraged to participate. A collaboration with the East Haven senior center led to the first “fitness walk” for senior-center participants.

All proceeds go to benefit the East Haven Police Athletic League.
