NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — As F eeding America reports that food insecurity is up 23% this year in Connecticut, one supermarket chain is stepping in to help.

Stop & Shop presented Connecticut Foodshare with a $640,000 donation on Tuesday as part of Feeding America’s Hunger Action Day.

“There is at least one family in each of the 169 towns here that is food insecure, and our job as CT Foodshare is to be out there in each of those 169 towns helping people in times of need,” Jason Jakubowski, the president and CEO of Connecticut Foodshare, said.

The donation will provide more than 1.2 million meals to 400,000 people. It will also go toward Connecticut Foodshare’s mobile food pantry and fresh produce initiatives.

Stop & Shop also did a volunteer takeover at Connecticut Foodshare’s three locations.

“This day is really a call to action for everybody to do what they can,” Jennifer Barr, the director of community relations for Stop & Shop, said. “Sign up for a volunteer shift like our employees are doing today. Donate if you can. It’s so important that we all join together.”
