In February, Berlin police were dispatched to the home of Richard Valuk, 47, who was having a medical emergency. While at the scene, police learned that there may be illegal explosives and fireworks in the home, and reached out to state police.

State police allegedly found a large amount of illegal fireworks in the house, which Valuk admitted to have been purchased in Pennsylvania. Additionally, police said that the fireworks were not stored safely and that anyone could access them.

Valuk was arrested on Friday after turning himself into Hartford police and was charged with risk of injury to a child, illegal possession of explosives, illegal transport of explosives and reckless endangerment in the first degree. He was held on a $100,000 bond.
