    Route 159 in Suffield shut down following chemical spill at HP Hood facility

    SUFFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — Route 159 was shut down following a chemical spill at the HP Hood facility in Suffield, according to police.

    At around 12:47 a.m., Suffield Police were notified of an anhydrous ammonia leak at HP Hood located near East South Steet.

    Police said HP Hood was evacuated immediately, along with neighboring businesses and some residences. No injuries were reported.

    The Suffield fire and police departments, Suffield volunteer ambulance association, and mutual aid resources from Windsor Locks and Enfield responded.

    The Department of Energy and Protection also responded with their Emergency Response Unit, around 1:21 a.m.

    The video below aired around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

    As of 8:25 a.m., that unit was still on scene with the refrigeration company and police, and planned to enter the building again to attempt to stop the leak.

    Fire crews respond to a boat in distress in East Haven

    DEEP officials said their consistent air monitoring has not detected any ammonia outside the building.

    As of 8:15 a.m., crews were still on scene but starting to clear the area. There is no immediate hazard to the public at the time, according police.

    The investigation remains ongoing.
