NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — Central Connecticut State University hosted “Salsa Fest” on Wednesday to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off in Connecticut with the Greater Waterbury Puerto Rican Day Parade and Festival

The event featured a live performance by the Hartt School All-Stars and a salsa dancing workshop. Salsa first gained popularity in the northeast in the 1960s in New York.

“Salsa truly is a communication between you and the partner and you and the music,” Xiomara Colon, a salsa dance instructor, said. “The ability to be able to incorporate different elements from other music makes it fun and makes it lively.”

News 8 will continue to bring you stories like these throughout the month.
