NORTH HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — North Haven’s first selectman said the town will not euthanize feral cats after animal control posted about plans to do so.

Animal control initially posted on Facebook on Friday that it would start trapping and euthanizing feral cats at the start of October. The post was then deleted after the community expressed backlash in the comments.

The police department also posted about the plans.

“The trapping of these cats was prompted by complaints of feral cats in the area, causing unsanitary conditions, as well as danger to domestic animals,” police said in a Facebook post Friday afternoon.

One of those incidents involved a pet dog that lost an eye after being attacked, police said.

They said the goal of the trapping effort is to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and domestic pets while improving sanitary conditions in the area.

Police said feral cats carry diseases like rabies, toxoplasmosis and cryptosporidiosis, and they’re known for damaging gardens, lawns, flower beds, cars and outdoor equipment.

The trappings are set to begin in the Vineyard Road area on Oct. 1, North Haven Animal Control officials said in a Facebook post published Friday and taken down about an hour later.

Residents who own domestic cats were urged to keep their pets inside for the next six weeks to avoid them getting picked up.

The now-deleted post said they would also advertise the trapped cats and hold them for seven days before euthanizing them.

In their post Friday afternoon, police said they were happy to report several local non-profits have contacted the town wanting to help with any trapped cats.

The groups will apparently now help animal control determine the health and well-being of the cats and make efforts to have them adopted.

“Our best effort is being made to protect the residents of the affected area, while providing a safe alternative for the cats,” police said in the post.
