HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The Connecticut Department of Public Health celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program on Friday.

The program has worked to improve birth outcomes, provide nutrition services and reduce the cost of health care. As it looks forward, it also plans to modernize for how people find food.

“[We are] a place where families can learn and connect, come together and be educated on how to be healthy and provide nutritious foods for themselves and their families,” said Jody Terranova, the deputy commissioner of the state department of public health.
