HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — CVS Health plans to lay off about 2,900 people, which means some employees in Hartford could lose their jobs.

It’s unclear how many of those 2,900 could be in Connecticut. The company said most of those jobs are corporate roles. Jobs in stores, pharmacies and distribution centers will not be impacted.

The impacts of the layoffs could have impacts on more than just the CVS employees in the capitol city: surrounding businesses could also feel effects.

“The strategy that the city has right now to bring more feet onto the streets it’s more focused on college and building more apartments, so hopefully this isn’t long-term, and it won’t be a huge dent, but it definitely hurts,” Jack Sullivan of the Bop Coffee on Pratt Street said.

A commuter said that his train could have a different vibe today after the news broke.

“There is a consistent group of people riding the train from New Haven to Hartford and I’ll be interested to see what happens when they take the train home tonight so I’m sure it’ll be a somber attitude,” Jeremy Jamilkowski of Hartford said.

Impacted employees will be notified this week. They will receive severance pay and benefits.

It’s all in an effort to save $2 billion.

Not the same Aetna that us nutmeggers remember so well. So the layoffs are corporate, probably Hartford, CT and Woonsocket, RI (CVS headquarters). Hope to hear from our newly elected Hartford Mayor.
