NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Tuesday marked the first day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Held annually in October, communities nationwide join forces to raise awareness about the far-reaching impact of domestic violence.

“My name could have been on that list last year,” said Angel Hubbard, a survivor and New Haven Alder for Ward 3. “The victims that did lose their lives to domestic violence, they don’t have a voice.”

Angel Hubbard, a survivor, released purple flowers into the New Haven Harbor, remembering her painful past while honoring those no longer with us.

“I’m just honored,” Hubbard said. “The City of New Haven, state police, and everyone did their due diligence to make sure I was safe at all times [and] my family was safe.”

Hubbard was among those in attendance at the Sound of Hope ce remony with BH care on Tuesday. During the ceremony, the names of 26 people who tragically lost their lives to domestic violence in Connecticut last year were read aloud.

“I still remember an experience I’ll never forget,” said Pastor Hector Vera, who spoke at the ceremony. “I saw my mom crying. When I looked at her face, she was bleeding. I didn’t understand in the moment, later on I did understand it, my father was the one who hit her. It impacted me so much through the years.”

Members of law enforcement were recognized, as well, for their dedication and efforts to ensuring the safety and well-being of domestic violence victims and for fostering a sense of trust and collaboration.

“We all have a role to play in the fight against domestic violence,” said Esperina Stubblefield, director of Domestic Violence Services at BH care. “Not just in the month of October, but throughout the year.”

As this fight continues, Hubbard shared this message with anyone needing help.

“The first thing they have to do is seek safety,” Hubbard told News 8. “Don’t be afraid. Because when you’re afraid, you’re showing your perpetrator he has control, but they don’t. You have the power.”
