NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — 101 College St. in New Haven is home to the new BioCity Lab, a dream that’s been in the making since the COVID-19 pandemic and is now a reality.

“We were having these conversations about this amazing building that was someone’s dream that we’re now standing in,” city alder Carmen Rodriguez said.

The BioCity Lab is a collaboration between the City of New Haven, New Haven Public Schools, area universities, and BioLabs’ owner.

“This program for students through dual enrollment will earn credits in STEM-related fields, as well as be introduced to industries with potential for training opportunities,” said Thomas Coley, the interim CEO of CT State Community College-Gateway.

During the program’s first year, 15 students from schools like Hill Regional Career High, James Hillhouse, and Wilbur Cross High will earn 11 college credits.

“This opportunity is a great advantage for us because we get to gain experience in a laboratory and get to be around professionals while still being juniors in high school,” student Bryana Sarango-Torres said.

But this program is not just about academics. Students said it also offers them prime time, a period in the day when they are encouraged to seek help and support.

”Bob usually drops in with mind-tricking games that challenge and encourage us to think creatively,” student Arsad Ullah said.

Right now, various STEM and research projects are happening at BioLabs. Students can work alongside scientists, gaining knowledge for the future. The chance of a lifetime, yes, but not just for students.

”There are 28 tenants in our portfolio in the building who are fortunate to have you in the building,” Carter Winstanley, the building’s owner, said.
