WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Monday night was a big step forward for the Wampanoag Country Club in West Hartford after two fires, just 24 hours apart, destroyed their clubhouse in April.

6 months later, they received two unanimous approvals from West Hartford’s Planning and Zoning Commission to rebuild.

“People had a lot of memories in that building, but we worked hard over the last six months to come up with a plan of a beautiful new clubhouse in the same place as the old one and we will make new memories moving forward,” Wampanoag Country Club President Glenn Cunningham said.

Cunningham said the new clubhouse will be the same size as the last one, with two stories and multiple outdoor terraces. It will have space for events, dining, member amenities, a pro shop and more with traffic improvements.

“Really take advantage of the million dollar views over the golf course looking over Talcott Mountain,” Cunningham said.

The commission also unanimously approved to waive a $2,100 special-use permit fee for the country club due to the tragic circumstances.

Cunningham said the cause of the fires are still under investigation. He adds the commission’s approval, and their new design will be a hole-in-one for their over 400 members and the community.

“We are absolutely thrilled because this allows us to move forward rather quickly,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham said they hope to start pouring the new foundation in the coming weeks with construction expected to be completed by next fall.
