CONNECTICUT (WTNH) — From preventing cyber crime to maintaining election security, the FBI takes on a wide range of issues to ensure the safety of Connecticut residents.
“These are the key issues that we are working on today,” Anish Shukla, acting special agent in charge at FBI New Haven, said.
FBI, attorney general issue cyber crime warning in Connecticut On Tuesday, News 8 sat down with leaders in the New Haven field office. They said cyber security, swatting incidents, voter fraud and white powder threats are among their top priorities.
“We live here, we work here, we raise our families here, we care deeply about the issues impacting our community,” Shukla said.
We learned, during our conversation, how critical their partnerships are with state and local police departments. In recent weeks, they’ve teamed up as school threats have been reported at districts statewide.
“We have seen at least one swatting incident, at least one a day for the last month,” Shukla said. “We are working day in day and day out with every police department in the state to figure out if this is the product of someone who forwarded a post — or more nefarious in nature.”
They’re also working to address cyber crimes that have targeted Connecticut residents, such as romance and elderly fraud-based scams where people have lost money.
FBI and Yale University open applications for Future Law Enforcement Youth Academy “Because of AI, the phone calls that come through — or the video messages that come through to victims — are almost impossible for fictions to determine fact from fiction,” Shukla said.
As we inch closer to November, they’re paying close attention to the upcoming election to ensure the safety of the election and preventing voter fraud.
“Threats to election workers, threats to infrastructure, threats to the integrity of the process, that is something we’re keenly aware of,” Kevin Hughey, an operational supervisor at FBI New Haven, said.
There’s a focus on outreach, as well. They stressed the community is their partner in all that they do.
