WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — The Naugatuck freight railroad line has been around since the early 1900s, but now, the bridge is desperately in need of repairs.

Connecticut leaders kick off Rail Safety Week to reduce pedestrian-related accidents

“When you upgrade freight it works on so many different levels,” Rep. John Piscopo said. “Economic, public safety, environmental.”

A $1 million dollar grant from the Freight Rail Infrastructure Program is funding the project to repair the bridge. The program was created by the legislature in 2013 with a specific purpose in mind: to provide funding to eight freight railroads.

For 28 years, the line has provided freight and passenger service from Waterbury to Torrington.
