NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — The New Britain community held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss security plans with the Board of Education, which could include putting metal detectors in all the front doors of their schools.

“Often times many school districts make these decisions behind closed doors and I think the transparency is admirable,” Susan Hunanick, an English teacher, said.

2 weeks ago, a gun threat was called into Vance Elementary School in New Britain, sparking alarm and outcry from parents. The discussion surrounding security at the schools was happening long before that, however: the board has been asking for input from the community for a year.

“If the issue was gone violence and stabbings and stuff like that, and then I think I would be all on board, but the issue I feel is fighting, so we should be more towards how do we fix that as opposed to metal detectors you know,” Deivone Tanksley, a community member, said.

Other security measures discussed were maintenance to fences, panic buttons and radios.
