NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — In New Haven, you can now eat delicious pizza and even enjoy it as an art form.

The new “pizza capital monument” is an ode to apizza and the latest piece of work from the New Haven Pizza Club .

The 9,000-pound sculpture is now outside Modern Apizza on State Street, but after a few months, it will find a permanent home elsewhere in the city.

“We have pizza to make people smile too, but this is just a little extra ‘wow’ factor on top of it. I just think it’s really great for the community,” Modern Apizza owner William Pustari said.

The New Haven Pizza Club is a local art collective that works to honor the Elm City’s rich pizza legacy.

The man behind it all is New Haven-born artist Michael Pollack.

His latest art exhibit is open to the public at the city’s “District” building on James Street.

It features fine art, sculptures, photography, prints and collaborations- all inspired by pizza, which Pollack said is a universal love language of sorts.

“I wanted something that was going to be universally appreciated- which we all know pizza is,” Pollack said. “In the art world, I think it’s really important to evoke emotion out of people looking at it. And we all know how we feel when we talk about New Haven pizza.”

In addition to several community collaborations, the New Haven Pizza Club is also giving back.

Pollack said a portion of all proceeds will be donated to the Feeding Families Foundation, which provides food to the people in need at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.
