BURLINGTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Two people were killed Saturday night after their vehicle hit a tree and erupted into flames in Burlington, according to state police.

Just after 11 p.m. Saturday, a 2012 Ford Taurus was traveling northbound near 61 Johnnycake Rd.

For an unknown reason, the driver went into the right shoulder and struck a mailbox before halting against a tree, state police said. The Burlington Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and located the Ford “consumed by fire.”

The vehicle’s two occupants died at the scene, and state police are working to contact their next of kin before releasing their identities.
