WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A New Haven man was arrested and charged after striking a cruiser and almost hitting a police officer.

Chavis Goldson, 18, of New Haven was arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a permit illegal manufacturing of a firearm, weapon in a motor vehicle, interfering with an officer, larceny of a motor vehicle, engaging officers in pursuit, risk of injury to a minor.

According to police, on Sept. 29, at around 5:50 p.m., an officer on patrol noticed a 2016 Lexus that was put out stolen from Stratford Police Department traveling north on Forest Road.

Police tried to stop the Lexus, but the driver accelerated to try and flee the police.

Police said they later found that the car matching the description of the stolen Lexus struck a Fairfield cruiser and then intentionally drove at a Fairfield officer, almost striking the officer who was out of the cruiser at the time earlier that day.

Police said the Lexus drove west on Derby Avenue and entered Orange. A second officer was in the area and witnessed the Lexus on the side of the road.

The officer thought the Lexus was abandoned, and the driver might have been on foot so he approached the car to make sure. The driver was still inside the Lexus and accelerated back into West Haven.

The Lexus eventually slowed down and was caught up in traffic. An officer put out stop sticks, which flattened his tires.

The driver of the Lexus tried to flee police again, but when they passed another car, they lost control and struck a pole on Deby Avenue, police said.

Officers said that as they approached the Lexus, they saw two men run from the Lexus and a third underaged woman still inside the car.

Officers said they ran after the two men who fled on foot.

One officer said that the person he was chasing grabbed at his waistband, removed a handgun, and threw it on the ground in the woods.

The officer was able to catch up to him and arrest him.

Police said they found the gun that had been discarded in a wooded area. The 9mm ghost gun that was seized had one round in the chamber.

The second man who fled was never captured.

The underage woman was taken to a local hospital for her injuries, according to police.

Chavis had a court date the following day at Milford Superior Court, police said.
