NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) — A child died after being pulled from a house fire in Norwich on Tuesday, according to police.

The fire happened at a two-story residence on Summit Street. The child, a 7-year-old girl, was transported to the hospital, where she later died.

Amanda Ottavi, a neighbor, said that the oldest child of the family came knocking on her door asking for help when the fire broke out.

“The oldest daughter came up banging on my door screaming ‘help me help me call 911 my house is on fire!'” Ottavi said.

Ottavi said that four people tried to get into the house to stop the fire and save the girl.

“And when you have reports of a child, it is a nightmare call, the vast majority of us have children and our grandchildren and we know how important it is to get there as quickly as we can, it is difficult we offer critical incident stress debriefing we have a team available in the morning when they come off shift,” Chief Tracy Montoya of the Norwich Fire Department said.

The superintendent of Norwich schools said that grief counselors will also be available at their schools tomorrow as the community mourns the loss of the girl.
