UConn gets $587K to train mental health professionals

STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) — The University of Connecticut will use a new grant to try and boost the number of mental health service providers in schools.

The university has received $587,633 from the Mental Health Service Professionals Demonstration Program, U.S. Rep. Rose DeLauro (D-Conn.) and John Larson (D-Conn.) jointly announced on Friday.

“Mental health is critical for the well-being of students,” DeLauro said in the written announcement. “To tackle the mental health crisis we face, we need a strong and capable workforce of mental health professionals ready to provide comprehensive care and support in our schools and communities. With this funding, UCONN can continue to develop a strong pipeline of mental health professionals who can ensure our students have access to the mental health services they need.”

The programs hopes to increase the number of mental health service providers in schools. UConn plans to use the funds to recruit and train professionals.
