WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — Grace Baptist Church of Waterbury followed in a storied tradition Saturday afternoon by bringing Souls to the Polls with their voting rally.

Legislators like Senator Chris Murphy and Congresswoman Jahana Hayes were in attendance at Grace Baptist to educate voters about their platforms as early voting begins in Connecticut.

Various different political leaders met with their constituents at the church where people were encouraged to listen to politicians explain their platforms and goals and make an informed decision.

“We want the people to be able to vote today,” said Kristopher Reese, Senior Pastor at Grace Baptist Church. “We have van transportation. So if you are so excited after hearing from the political leaders we’ll take you to the polling place so you can vote.”

“Souls to the Polls” has long been a slogan used by the Black church in America to encourage political participation, particularly during the 1960s when the right to vote was a core tenant of the Civil Rights Movement.

The event was free for all in attendance with food, live music and entertainment for the kids.
