WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) – The National Weather Service (NWS) conducted a storm damage assessment in Monroe County following the severe weather that moved through the area Wednesday morning.

The storm in question moved through Monroe and Southern Belmont County after 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The NWS Pittsburgh storm survey team found EF-2 tornado damage in Malaga Township in Monroe County.

Estimated peak wind gusts of 120 mph were noted along State Route 800 and Minder Road.

Residents in Beallsville, Ohio, experienced the backlash of the major storm that ripped across the Ohio Valley on Wednesday.

Some people’s homes were damaged, barns and sheds were torn apart, and equipment was toppled due to the harsh winds.

Buildings in Miltonsburg and Jerusalem also experienced structural damage.

The tornado continued intermittently on the ground over four miles.

There have been three confirmed tornadoes to move through Monroe County.

Wednesdays event is the strongest on record for the county.

The other two tornado events occured back on June 22, 1990 and May 8, 1969.
