OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) – April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to raise awareness on the dangers associated with alcohol, and resources to help those struggling with addiction.

But you don’t have to be an alcoholic to have issues.

Officials with First Choice Services tell us that alcohol misuse contributes to about 178,000 deaths per year.

It’s also a major contributing factor to motor vehicle crashes, domestic abuse, murder and is second only to opioids as a substance-related reason people call First Choice Services for help.

“There are a lot of issues with alcohol, and not just someone becoming dependent on it. Even moderate drinking can lead to social, emotional and health issues, especially for women. Many people don’t realize that even moderate consumption of alcohol can contribute to multiple types of cancers.”

Sheila Moran – Marketing and Communications Director for First Choice Services

If you, or a loved one are suffering from alcohol-related problems, First Choice Services recommends to give them a call at 1-844-HELP-4WV or you can visit HELP4WV.com .

They can walk you through how to talk to someone that may be having problems, and they offer several options for quick access to treatment.
