WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — The West Virginia Junior College ( WVJC) School of Nursing announced its new Online/Hybrid Nursing program, available to students in Wheeling, West Virginia, and the surrounding areas.

According to school officials, the WVJC Online/Hybrid Nursing program provides student nurses with the convenience of completing their didactic courses online while also offering the crucial hands-on lab and clinical components at WVU Medicine’s Wheeling and Reynolds Memorial Hospitals. Nursing students will also have the opportunity to be supported by labs in one of WVJC’s Mobile Nursing Labs (MNL).

WVJC released a statement “At WVJC School of Nursing, we believe in efficiency. That’s why we employ a direct admission policy, allowing students to begin their nursing-related courses immediately upon acceptance into the program. Upon completion of the 18-month program, students will be conferred an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN)*.”

“When we set out to innovate a new way of delivering nursing education, we never imagined how successful it would be,” said WVJC School of Nursing CEO Chad Callen.  We are excited to finally be able to bring this unique model to Wheeling/Reynolds Hospitals, which will help develop their nursing workforce pipeline by opening access to non-traditional students who would not otherwise be able to go to nursing school.”

School officials say that student nurses in the Online/Hybrid Nursing program in Wheeling have the added benefit of gaining experience in the hospital systems, where they may become employed upon graduation. The program facilitates a seamless transition from student to working nurse by exposing the student to the hospital’s culture during their education.

“This program offers future nurses an advantage by giving them the opportunity to learn from experienced nurses, receive feedback from their peers, and gain hands-on experience in a real hospital setting,” said WVJC Online Campus President Samantha Esposito. “This allows for a more comprehensive educational experience and a better-prepared nurse for the future.”

The WVJC School of Nursing is now accepting applications for the first cohort of nurses in the Online/Hybrid Nursing program in Wheeling, which starts in September 2024. Openings are limited, so interested applicants are encouraged to contact the WVJC School of Nursing admissions team by calling 877-25ONLINE or visiting wvjc.edu to get started.

*Passing the NCLEX-RN exam is required to become a Registered Nurse.
