    West Virginia Primary results

(WTRF) — 7News is your local election headquarters.

West Virginia went to the polls Tuesday for an election year primary, and no matter your county, there were major issues on the ballot.

Wheeling had races for city council in all six wards, with new member Tony Assaro Jr. elected to the 1st ward and Jerome Henry elected to the 3rd.

A tight six-person race for mayor resulted in a victory for Denny Magruder with more than 36 percent of the vote.

Ohio County at large picked four new magistrate judges and chose Republican Nelson Croft, Jr. to run against Democrat John Haglock in the general election.

Croft plans to make fighting opioid abuse a major priority if he wins in November.

“The opioid crisis is out of hand here and we’re not doing ourselves any favors. I can’t do anything about the border and I won’t get into that politics. But I can do something with it. Coming into Ohio County, I had a lot of experience in drug interdiction. I plan to get our crew back together and start trying to battle that again.”

Marshall County also held a race for sheriff, with Mike Dougherty winning the close election.

He will take on the position starting in January.

The county elected John Miller and Lori Kestner to fill the two available Board of Education seats.

Man dies after dump truck falls down embankment

A dump truck fell down an embankment in Marshall County this week, leaving one man dead.

Sheriff Bill Helms says 43-year-old Matthew Toosley of Moundsville was driving when his brakes went out on Round Bottom Hill.

The truck then crossed West Virginia Route 2 and went through a guardrail, falling 30 to 40 feet.

Police say Toosley died at the scene.

Austin Master to face court hearing Monday

Austin Master Services in Martins Ferry will face a court hearing Monday for storing illegal amounts of radioactive material.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has asked a Belmont County judge to find the waste management company in contempt, after failing to comply with a deadline to clean up what is described as “harmful contaminants” and “sludge.”

The state Department of Natural Resources had told the company in February to remove the extra waste, before ordering it shut down on March 19th.

More than 9,000 gallons of processed wastewater have been removed by Ohio in the last month, and one worker’s boots tested several times higher than the legal limit for radiation.

Bellaire photography students create public mural

Months of dedicated artistic work led to Bellaire High School students revealing a new photo mural along Belmont Street.

First responders, business leaders, students and teachers are spread out along its 50 by 25-foot canvas to honor everything they’ve done for the Belmont County village.

The Great Stone Viaduct also features over a caption reading ‘What Can You Contribute?’

Students spent the school year contacting and interviewing those shown on the final product.

“It looks amazing. I’m really happy that we did this project. Everyone in the town seems to love it. So it was great. I really love my town and I’m happy to be from here, so I’m happy to have done this.”
