CAMERON, W.Va. (WTRF) — One local band has gotten some very exciting news. They received more than $30,000 to help pay for a special trip to Washington, D.C. next summer where they will be representing all of West Virginia.

The Cameron High School Band is the only band in the state invited to participate in the Independence Day parade in the nation’s capital next year.

The program only had 2 students in 2022, and now it has grown to about 75.

On Monday, the band was presented with roughly $31,000 from alumni and various donors to ensure that all the band members can travel to the parade.

A former teacher and coach at the high school, David Evans, has been a big advocate for raising the funds needed for the $75,000 trip.

”We ended up with a list of 74 people and we reached out to those through letters and we received a response of about 46, 47% did participate and did donate to the program.”

”These kids are finally, I don’t want to say finally, but they’re really kind of turning a new leaf of there’s pride to be shared everywhere and that’s what this community is showing us.”

Christian Oliver – Band Director, Cameron High School

If you want to donate for the band’s trip, all you need to do is make a check out to Cameron High School Band and send it to the school.
