WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — A Wheeling historic home is now one step closer to being fully restored thanks to the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia.

The Friends of Wheeling’s Hughes House restoration project is receiving a $10,000 grant from the PAWV to finish restoring the windows on the structure.

The building was owned by the Hughes family who were Confederate supporters during the Civil War.

The President of Friends of Wheeling says the main reason they want to preserve the building is to prevent its removal from the North Wheeling National Historic District.

”Wheeling is so rich in history and every time we find a building like this, which isn’t one of the grand Victorians, we find the fascinating history. The goal is to have two, two-bedroom housing units, assuming that we can get them livable and then we will sell those and use the proceeds to move on to another preservation project.”

Jeanne Finstein – President, Friends of Wheeling

The next phase of the project will be the rear side of the building which features two root cellars that were built during the same time as the home.
