Local 2-year-old battling heart condition getting help from OV

WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) — After the 2-year-old boy went into cardiac arrest twice in early July due to a rare heart condition, Laiden Schaffer is still fighting for his life but luckily for him the community is rallying around him.

Quaker Steak and Lube in the Highlands and the McMechen Volunteer Department are holding a special event to raise money for Laiden and his family.

On Sunday, August 18 the community is invited to come out for a touch-the-truck event that will have several activities for everyone. The event will include live music, bouncy houses, a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese auction, and a dunk tank. Of course, there will be fire trucks on display at the event from local departments for guests to explore.

The marketing manager for Quaker Steak and Lube in the Highlands says helping one of their own is something they always consider.

”It means a lot. I know people think, you know, we’re a chain restaurant or whatever, but really we’re a local restaurant with local people and we love to help local people. You just never know when you can be in that position. So I hope, you know, people see what we do for lots of people that we don’t know. They’re just members of the Valley and we hope that everyone comes and supports them.”

The event will run from 12 pm to 6 pm and all proceeds made at the event will go towards Laiden’s recovery.

If you are unable to attend the event but would still like to donate you can mail donations to the McMechen Volunteer Fire Department at 811 Marshall Street in McMechen, West Virginia 26031, or drop them off between 8 am and 8 pm.
