When a coach has to replace 11 starters from the year before, taking a deep breath is very important. At River, Coach Flannery has a word for that, and to spell it you might need a dictionary.

“Today’s word is equanimity, and that means calmness of the mind, and so I got to be there and several players need to be there a little bit, and so equanimity.”

    Mike Flannery- Head Coach

In the spirit of equanimity, Flannery is trusting an experienced signal-caller to be his new quarterback. The only catch, is the man for the job played Center and Middle Linebacker last season, which might not be so different.

“It’s a lot different back there but it’s kind of the same, you’re reading everything and you just got to see what the field is and just make your read and be confident.”

    Peyton Blue- Quarterback

“First of all no hesitation on my part because I understand how athletic he is and he he a 3-sport player, you know him in baseball but he stands out in basketball, he’s a competitor man he loves to compete.”

Surrounding Blue is returning running back Lucas Dennis and an arsenal of new weapons including Baue Charlton, Aidan Milhoan, Trey Larrick & Wyatt Stalder.

Their best weapon however probably won’t touch the ball much. He’s a 6’5, 362 pound Left Tackle with local college interest, that the team knows, as Big D.

“Big D Gentle Giant, he wouldn’t hurt a fly, I mean I’ve never seen him mad so uh I wouldn’t want to be around when he does get mad, I think he did question me one time when I took two little debbies out of his lunch box that mom packed but he remained kinda silent about it.”

“Big Guy, I’m hoping he’s gonna have a great year, I’m not scared of anything from him.”

Aside from Big D and few others tho, this team is still lacking experience. The one silver-lining to that fact, is the spoils of opportunity.

“The number 1 thing is it builds confidence in competition, and they know there’s a lot of slots open and they’re all fighting for them because we lost 11 seniors last year and all 11 started, lotta holes the fill and we’re looking forward to it.”

The Pilots have until August 22nd to fill those holes, when they gear up to play at Colonel Crawford under the Thursday Night Lights.
